DHe came home to Bm7Tennessee, D/Cyoung man at the Bm7end of Aforty Em7five
Only Aone of seven men in his platoon that made it back a- Dlive
And he must've seen some Bm7tough things, but he D/Cnever said too Bm7much A'bout all Em7that
Put his Apictures and his memories in our cedar chest, Em7everything but Ahis old army Dhat
DBy the time that Bm7I was born, the D/Cwinds of change had Bm7swept a- Across our Em7land
They were Aburning flags and draft cards when they bothered to take some kind of Dstand
Now we used to laugh at Bm7grandpa like D/Che was some old Bm7relic Afrom the Em7past
'Cause he Anever left the house unless he was wearing that Em7funny looking Aworn out army Dhat
GEvery eye was on him, anytime when he went anywhere D
They Awhispered and they pointed, but you could tell my grandpa didn't care D
"I ain't Gwearing this for them", he'd say, "It's a whole lot more than Dthat
For my Em7buddies who gave everything
The Aleast that I can do is Em7keep on wearing Athis old army Dhat" Bm7 D/C Bm7 A
He Dcalled me up one Bm7morning, said he'd D/Cseen it on the Bm7news on Ahis Em7TV
"They've Aopened up a monument to World War II in Washington D
"I ain't getting any Bm7younger and I D/Cwish someone would Bm7take me to Asee Em7that"
And I Acouldn't help but think they're gonna laugh at you up there
If you Dshow up in that Asilly army Dhat
Two Dstrangers, both sa- Bm7lute as D/Cgrandpa walked up Bm7to the Amonu- Em7ment
AOne said, "Thank you soldier, for the job well done," the other said, "A- D-men"
And a young boy told him, " Bm7Sir, my daddy D/Cwent to war and Bm7didn't Amake it Em7back
Could you Atake a picture standing here beside me and Em7maybe let me Awear your army Dhat"
GEvery eye was on him, there was not a dry one in the Dcrowd
They Awhispered and they pointed as my grandpa stood up extra tall and Dproud
And he Gtold him, "Son, just keep it" when the young boy tried his best to give it Dback
"You're a Em7brave little soldier and Aevery soldier needs his Em7very own au- Athentic army Dhat"
"For your Em7daddy who gave everything the Aleast that I can do
Is Em7pass on this old Aworn out army Dhat" | Dx 7 D
