SortinGg through my things the other day
I found an old film camera that I Cthought I'd thrown aGway
But there it was covered in dust
I checked it and the film inside still Chad a few pictures Gleft
So I just snapped it off and then
I found a place on the high street that could Cstill develop Gthem
I dropped them off and clean forgot,
It wasn't until this morning that I Cpicked the pictures Emup
And there before my eyes in Amvivid colour
CPictures of her Gstood smiling Embold on the edge of a cliff by the sea
On the Amsouth coast somewhere,
CWind in her hair, Gwrapped against the Ccold
GThere were many other pictures in the set,
Most of them were taken in the Cfirst months after we Gmet
When we were lovers like happy drunks
Stumbling for each other with each Cstep, each breath in Gour lungs
Pictures of nights from soho bars
A weekend in the country when we bCorrowed my sister's Gcar,
Her naked, serene on a hotel bed
Smiling at the camera, her Cbeauty like a word uEmnsaid
And there before my eyes on the Amglossy paper
CQuiet whispers Gof something EmI had lost or put aside
For the Amlongest time
The Chope that I might Gfind some kind of Cpeace
EmOh oh oh where did it Dgo go go
I used to Emknow exactly Ab7where I kept it
EmThere right there under the Dstairs oh please
Darling I Emswear swear swear that's Ab7where I left it
EmSecret little things that you Dkeep locked away
In a Emsmall wooden box that you Ab7barely even mention to yourself Em
It's not exactly Dhope, nothing quite as simple as Emyouth
Perhaps it's just a way of Ab7looking past the Ctruth
We're all fading aDway
The Ab7truth I can see in the very last frame of that Emlong lost roll ofC film
A picture of Dme, a young man holding a camera up to a Ab7mirror
And Emthere before my eyes in that Amold reflection
A Cdeclaration Gbold: We won't stay Emgold
All that's left of her and the rest
Is a Amsmall locked box of Cundeveloped Gfilm and photoCgraphs G
