AWell I was thumbing from Montgomery.
CHad my guitar on my back.
DWhen a stranger stopped beside me
Ain an antique Cadillac.
AHe was dressed like 1950
Chalf-drunk and hollow-eyed
He said "DIt's a long walk to Nashville
would you like a rAide, son."
IA sat down in the front seat.
He tuCrned on the radio and them
Dsad old songs comin' out of them speakers
Awas solid country gold.
TAhen I noticed the stranger was ghost white pale
when he aCsked me for a light
And I Dknew there was somthin' strange about this Aride.
He said "GDrifter can you make folks Dcry
when you play anAd sing?
Have you Apaid your dues? Can you moan the blues?
Can you Ebend them guitar strings?"
He said "GBoy can you make folksD feel what you feelA inside
CAuse if you're bGig star bound
let me warnD ya' it's a long, hard Aride."
Then he Acried just south of Nashville
and he tCurned that car around.
He saidD "This is where you get off boy A
'cause I'm goin' back to Alabam
AAs I stepped out of that old Cadillac
I saidC "Mister, many thanks."
DHe said "You don't have to call me Mister, Mister.
AThe whole world called me Hank."
'Cause if you're bGig star bound
let me wDarn ya' it's a long, haArd ride."
