Everyone considered him the cFoward of the county
He Cnever stood one single time to prove the county Gwrong.G
His Cmama named him Tommy, the Ffolks just called him Cyellow
But Csometing always told me they were Greading Tommy Cwrong
CHe was only ten years old when his Fdaddy died in Cprison
CI looked after Tommy cause he was my brother's sGon G
I Cstill recall the final words my Fbrother said to CTommy
C"Son my life is over but Gyours is just Cbegun"
C"Promise me, son, not to Fdo the things I've Cdone
CWalk away from trouble if you Gcan
CIt won't mean you're weak if you Fturn the other cheek
I Chope you're old enough to underGstand
Son Gyou don't have to fight to be a Cman"
There's Dsomeone for everyone and GTommy's love was DBecky
In her arms he didn't have to prove he was a Aman
One Dday while he was working, the GGatlin boys came Dcallin'
They took turns at Becky, there was Athree of Dthem
DTommy opened up the door and Gsaw his Becky Dcryin'
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could Astand
He Dreached above the fireplace and took Gdown his daddy's Dpicture
As his tears fell on his daddy's face, he Aheard these words Dagain
"Promise me, son, not to Gdo the things I've Ddone
Walk away from trouble if you Acan
DIt won't mean you're weak if you Gturn the other Dcheek
I hope you're old enough to undersAtand
Son you don't have to fight to be a Dman"
The Gatlin Boys just laughed at him when he Gwalked into the Dbar room
One of them got up and met him halfway 'cross the Afloor
When DTommy turned areound they said, Hey Glook ol' yellow's Dleavin'
But you coulda heard a pin drop when Tommy Astopped and blocked the Ddoor
Twenty years of crawling was Gbottled up inDside him
He wasn't holding nothin' back he let 'em have it Aall
When DTommy left the bar room not a GGatlin boy was Dstandin'
He said this one's for Becky," as he Awatched the last one Dfall (And I heard him say)
I promised you Dad not to Gdo the things you Ddone
I walk away from trouble when I Acan
Now Dplease don't think I'm weak I didn't Gturn the other Dcheek
And Poppa, I sure hope you underAstand
Sometimes you gotta fight when you're a Dman
Everyone considered him the Gcoward of the Dcounty
