RaineyG Williams playground was the Mott Haven streets
Where he ranC past melted candles anGd flower wreaths
CNames and photos of young blacGk faces
Whose death and Dblood consecrated theseG places
Raineys Gmother said Rainey stay at my side
For you aCre my blessing, you are Gmy pride
Its yourC love here that keeps my souGl alive
I want you toD come home from school and stayG inside
Rainey'd do his wGork and put his books away
There was a channeCl showed a Western movie eveGryday
Lynette brought him Chome books on the black cowboys of the GOklahoma range
The SeminoleD scouts that fought the tribes of tGhe Great Plains
CSummer come and thGe days grew long
CRainey always had his mother'Gs smile to depend on
CAlong the street of strGay bullets he made his way
CTo the warmth of herG arms at the end of CeacGh day
GCome the fall, the rain flooded these homes
Here inC Ezekiel's valley of Gdry bones
ItC fell hard and dark to the grGound
DIt fell without a sGound
GLynette took up with a man whose business was the boulevard
WhoseC smile was fixed in a face that was never offG guard
In theC pipes 'neath the kitchen sink his Gsecrets he kept
In theD day, behind drawn curtains in Lynette's beGdroom he slept
CThen she got lost in tGhe days
TChe smile Raney dependeGd on dusted away
CThe arms that held him wereG no more his home
DHe lay at night his head pressed to her cGhest listening to tChe ghost in her
BoGnes
GIn the kitchen Rainey slipped his hand between the pipes
From a brCown bag pulled five hundred dollar bills
And stuGck it in his coat side
CStood in the dark at hisG mother's bed
Brushed hDer hair and kissed herG eyes
GIn the twilight Rainey walked to the station on streets of stone
Through PennsyClvania and Ohio his trainG drifted on
Through thCe small towns of Indiana the biGg train crept
As he lDay his head back on the seat and sGlept
He awoke and the Gtowns gave way to muddy fields of green
Corn and cCotton and endless nothin' in bGetween
Over the ruttedC hills of Oklahoma the red sunG slipped and was gone
The moon Drose and stripped the earth to itsG bone
