TDwas in the Amerry month of DMay,
When green buds Gall were sDwellin,
Sweet D7William Gon his Ddeath bed Bmlay
For Dlove of A7Barbara DAllen.
He sent his Aservant to the Dtown,
To the place where Gshe was Ddwellin,
SayiD7ng, "You must Gcome to my Dmaster Bmdear,
If your Dname be A7Barb´ry DAllen."
So, slowly, Aslowly she got Dup,
And slowly Gshe drew Dnigh him,
And theD7 only Gwords to Dhim did Bmsay,
"Young Dman, I A7think you´re Ddyin."
He turned his Aface unto the Dwall,
And death was Gin him Dwellin,
"Good-D7bye, good-Gbye to mDy friends aBmll,
Be Dgood to A7Barb´ry DAllen."
When he was Adead and laid in Dgrave,
She heard the Gdeath bells DKnellin,
And eD7very Gstroke to Dher did Bmsay:
"Hard-Dhearted A7Barb´ry DAllen."
"Oh mother, oh Amother, go dig my Dgrave,
Make it both Glong and Dnarrow;
Sweet WD7illiam Gdied of Dlove for Bmme,
And DI will A7die of Dsorrow."
"And father, oh Afather, go dig my Dgrave,
Make it both Glong and Dnarrow,
Sweet D7William Gdied Don yesterBmday,
And DI will A7die toDmorrow."
Barb´ry Allen was Aburied in the old church-Dyard,
Sweet William was Gburied besideD her;
Out of SD7weet William´s Gheart there Dgrew a Bmrose,
Out Dof Barb´ry A7Allen´s, aD briar.
They grew and Agrew in the old church-Dyard,

At the D7end they Gformed a true Dlovers´ Bmknot,
And the Drose grew A7round the Dbriar.
