Scroll Mode: Hands-Free Chord Reading
Every guitarist knows the struggle: you're mid-strum, the next chord is just off-screen, and you have to awkwardly pause to scroll down. Music stands help, but they don't solve the problem when you're reading chords on a phone or tablet.
That's why we built Scroll Mode on Toca Aquela — a simple way to keep your chord sheet moving while both hands stay on the guitar.
How Scroll Mode Works
On any song page, you'll find the scroll mode toggle at the top of the chord sheet. Once activated, it changes how you navigate through the song:
Tap-to-Advance
The default mode. Tap anywhere on the chord sheet and it smoothly scrolls to the next section. No need to pinch, drag, or find a tiny scrollbar. One tap, next section.
This works great on phones where screen real estate is limited. You can keep the phone on a music stand and give it a quick tap between chord changes.
Foot Pedal Support
If you use a Bluetooth foot pedal (like a Page Turner pedal), scroll mode works with it out of the box. The pedal sends a "Page Down" keystroke, and scroll mode translates that into a smooth advance to the next section.
This is the true hands-free experience. Set your phone or tablet on a stand, pair your pedal, and play through the entire song without touching the screen once.
Auto-Advance (Coming Soon)
We're working on a timed auto-scroll option that advances based on a configurable tempo. Set your BPM, hit play, and the chord sheet follows along. Stay tuned.
Why Hands-Free Matters
When you're learning a new song, every interruption breaks your flow. Stopping to scroll means:
- Lost rhythm — your strumming pattern resets
- Broken muscle memory — your fingers lose position on the fretboard
- Frustration — especially when you're close to nailing a tricky progression
Scroll mode eliminates these interruptions. Your eyes stay on the chords, your hands stay on the guitar, and the music keeps flowing.
Best Setup for Scroll Mode
Here's what works best for a hands-free chord reading experience:
- Phone or tablet on a stand — angle it at eye level so you don't hunch over
- Scroll mode activated — tap the toggle at the top of the song
- Bluetooth pedal (optional) — any page-turner pedal works; they're around $20-30
- Screen timeout disabled — keep your display on while you play
Works With Every Song
Scroll mode isn't limited to specific songs or instruments. It works on every chord sheet in our library — guitar, ukulele, keyboard, whatever you play. Open any song, turn on scroll mode, and start playing.
Browse songs at Toca Aquela and try scroll mode on your next practice session. Once you play hands-free, you won't go back to manual scrolling.
Tips for Practice Sessions
- Start with songs you know — use scroll mode to solidify muscle memory without visual interruptions
- Slow down new songs — tap-to-advance lets you control the pace while learning
- Use a large font — if your device supports text zoom, bigger chords are easier to read at a distance
- Practice standing up — scroll mode shines when your device is on a stand and you're playing in performance position
Scroll mode is one of several features we've built to make chord reading feel natural on modern devices. No ads blocking your view, no popups mid-song — just clean chords that move when you need them to.
